Today's trip to and interaction over dinner with NUS students performing their internship was insightful and had perhaps sparked a pivotal impact on many of us on how we have been living our pass 17/18 years of our lives thus how we should improve ourselves to remain competitive in the international market. 'Eyes wide open' is the most apt title as it typifies how much of an eye-opening experience was for us.
“To my surprise, I actually gained a lot from today's experience. Truthfully, I've learnt much more about the life of the shanghai high school's students from interacting with them rather than just touring around the school. What I really admired about them were their willingness to learn and perseverance as well. They really caught us by surprise when they literally bombarded us with questions about our school. Clearly from here we can see the difference between the level of preparedness from them and from us. To be honest, it was like two extreme ends. It would be unfair to say we totally did not prepare anything so what I would say is that all we did was to prepare what we wanted to know but thoroughly did not consider that they might want to learn from us too . Speaking of learning about each other, what we learned today was that their school is really what you call an 'all-rounder'. From academics to sports to clubs and entertainment. You name it, they have it. We were really given an insight to what life for a student there is like which in my opinion is what every student should obtain, given the requirements of the world today. This brings me to my next point. From my conversation with Isaac, the NUS transfer student, I ' ve learnt that we cannot remain sheltered in Singapore's protection forever. To have true experiences, one has to travel around the different countries. This was exactly what he did. I asked for the reason for him choosing to come to shanghai for his studies since he said that the credits they got from it in their certificates were not so important. And what he replied was that it was all for the experience. And I guess that is what that really counts at the end of the day. Qualifications are what almost everyone is working for today. But true talent and the right ways and methods to express it are the next level which we have to achieve. Thus, having the mindset that just a degree would be sufficient for you to survive is obsolete. The world is moving at a very fast pace and its time we speed up ours too. ”

“Indeed today was extremely fruitful. I learnt so much about how students if they have the drive can succeed in life. The drive that does not die but persists due to the hunger for knowledge. At Shanghai High School I was utterly surprised at the way the students learnt. They demonstrated what was needed to succeed and even when faced with setbacks they continue without giving up and never becoming complacent, always striving for excellence. This was what impressed me about their attitude. I realised that I have taken education for granted , with opportunities having passed me by because I was unwilling to capitalize on it. For dinner we talked to the NUS students who were working in Shanghai. My table was Kim, she admires Shanghai for its authentic culture; Shanghai is the gateway to many places and living in here is inexpensive as compared to Singapore. ”

“Today we went to visit Shanghai High School (SHS). Through interacting with them, we realised that the Shanghainese students are proficient in bith Mandarin and English. The lessons were conducted in mandarin and the students there study similar topics to us. We noticed that Singaporean students compared to Shanghainese students not as focused. They are also very well-informed about the current affairs in the country. We also feel that the school compound is much more well equiped and spacious. They even have a huge beautiful garden outside the classtooms! This definitely made this a more appealing school experience. The shanghainese students were very courteous and friendly to us. They are very willing to share what they know with us. And are very willing to share what they know with us. I think that she point we can take away is the heabit of 'Asking Questions'. For example, they were very curious aboit our lifestyles and mixed culture. They asked alot questions regarding our school system and even did research on our school's background beforehand. ”

“We realised that the students in Shanghai High School are very disciplined and well-mannered. On contrary to what we thought, they were not arrogant despite being elites of elite schools in China. This makes them even more capable as they are the cream of the 14 million crowd in Shanghai. Their humility impressed me as we as a group thought that 'smart' people tend to be more arrogant and be hostile to people they deem “unworthy”. They were also very eager to learn, you could literally see their passion through their body language and their pro-activeness in class. Besides being greatly impacted it, at the same time, made me worried as we personally do not share the same amount of eagerness nor do we see this often enough in Singapore students. This would also mean that in the long-run, we might not be able to keep up with our competitors here in the working world and get ousted from it. The way they conducted classes were also very different from how our education system. For example during their math class, students had only note books with them while SRJC students had lecture notes which provides us with full explanations as well as solutions. I thought that by doing so it indirectly force the students to pay extra attention to their lectures as they would have no other reference notes if they were to miss out any points. This point made me realize how fortunate we are to have teachers who are willing to go the extra mile to make our learning journey a more smooth-sailing one by providing solutions and explanations and offering consultations at their own expense. Also in Singapore, we are less detail-driven and more results-orientated, however in SHS, they are meticulous up to the finest details and teaching not just the subject but cultivating the interest and fondness for it . We believe this accounts for their passion for learning; something that we need to pick up as soon as possible before we get fall behind. ”
