Eyes wide open

Wednesday 09/12/2009, Day 2
Today's trip to and interaction over dinner with NUS students performing their internship was insightful and had perhaps sparked a pivotal impact on many of us on how we have been living our pass 17/18 years of our lives thus how we should improve ourselves to remain competitive in the international market. 'Eyes wide open' is the most apt title as it typifies how much of an eye-opening experience was for us.
“To my surprise, I actually gained a lot from today's experience. Truthfully, I've learnt much more about the life of the shanghai high school's students from interacting with them rather than just touring around the school. What I really admired about them were their willingness to learn and perseverance as well. They really caught us by surprise when they literally bombarded us with questions about our school. Clearly from here we can see the difference between the level of preparedness from them and from us. To be honest, it was like two extreme ends. It would be unfair to say we totally did not prepare anything so what I would say is that all we did was to prepare what we wanted to know but thoroughly did not consider that they might want to learn from us too . Speaking of learning about each other, what we learned today was that their school is really what you call an 'all-rounder'. From academics to sports to clubs and entertainment. You name it, they have it. We were really given an insight to what life for a student there is like which in my opinion is what every student should obtain, given the requirements of the world today. This brings me to my next point. From my conversation with Isaac, the NUS transfer student, I ' ve learnt that we cannot remain sheltered in Singapore's protection forever. To have true experiences, one has to travel around the different countries. This was exactly what he did. I asked for the reason for him choosing to come to shanghai for his studies since he said that the credits they got from it in their certificates were not so important. And what he replied was that it was all for the experience. And I guess that is what that really counts at the end of the day. Qualifications are what almost everyone is working for today. But true talent and the right ways and methods to express it are the next level which we have to achieve. Thus, having the mindset that just a degree would be sufficient for you to survive is obsolete. The world is moving at a very fast pace and its time we speed up ours too. ”

“Indeed today was extremely fruitful. I learnt so much about how students if they have the drive can succeed in life. The drive that does not die but persists due to the hunger for knowledge. At Shanghai High School I was utterly surprised at the way the students learnt. They demonstrated what was needed to succeed and even when faced with setbacks they continue without giving up and never becoming complacent, always striving for excellence. This was what impressed me about their attitude. I realised that I have taken education for granted , with opportunities having passed me by because I was unwilling to capitalize on it. For dinner we talked to the NUS students who were working in Shanghai. My table was Kim, she admires Shanghai for its authentic culture; Shanghai is the gateway to many places and living in here is inexpensive as compared to Singapore. ”

“Today we went to visit Shanghai High School (SHS). Through interacting with them, we realised that the Shanghainese students are proficient in bith Mandarin and English. The lessons were conducted in mandarin and the students there study similar topics to us. We noticed that Singaporean students compared to Shanghainese students not as focused. They are also very well-informed about the current affairs in the country. We also feel that the school compound is much more well equiped and spacious. They even have a huge beautiful garden outside the classtooms! This definitely made this a more appealing school experience. The shanghainese students were very courteous and friendly to us. They are very willing to share what they know with us. And are very willing to share what they know with us. I think that she point we can take away is the heabit of 'Asking Questions'. For example, they were very curious aboit our lifestyles and mixed culture. They asked alot questions regarding our school system and even did research on our school's background beforehand. ”
- Community
“We realised that the students in Shanghai High School are very disciplined and well-mannered. On contrary to what we thought, they were not arrogant despite being elites of elite schools in China. This makes them even more capable as they are the cream of the 14 million crowd in Shanghai. Their humility impressed me as we as a group thought that 'smart' people tend to be more arrogant and be hostile to people they deem “unworthy”. They were also very eager to learn, you could literally see their passion through their body language and their pro-activeness in class. Besides being greatly impacted it, at the same time, made me worried as we personally do not share the same amount of eagerness nor do we see this often enough in Singapore students. This would also mean that in the long-run, we might not be able to keep up with our competitors here in the working world and get ousted from it. The way they conducted classes were also very different from how our education system. For example during their math class, students had only note books with them while SRJC students had lecture notes which provides us with full explanations as well as solutions. I thought that by doing so it indirectly force the students to pay extra attention to their lectures as they would have no other reference notes if they were to miss out any points. This point made me realize how fortunate we are to have teachers who are willing to go the extra mile to make our learning journey a more smooth-sailing one by providing solutions and explanations and offering consultations at their own expense. Also in Singapore, we are less detail-driven and more results-orientated, however in SHS, they are meticulous up to the finest details and teaching not just the subject but cultivating the interest and fondness for it . We believe this accounts for their passion for learning; something that we need to pick up as soon as possible before we get fall behind. ”

And in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally

1751 «Observations Concerning the Increase of Mankind, Peopling of Countries,% 26amp; c.»:
. The Number of purely white People in the World is proportionably very small. All Africa is black or tawny. Asia chiefly tawny. America (exclusive of the new Comers) wholly so. And in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally of what we call a swarthy Complexion; as are the Germans also, the Saxons only excepted, who with the English, make the principal Body of White People on the Face of the Earth.
1751

Dreaming my little dreamy dreams…

“To sleep, perchance to dream – ay, there's the rub.” – Hamlet (III, i, 65-68)
You know, Hamlet said that because he knew his dreams would reflect the horrors that he was dealing life in his daily life. You can't really blame him; I mean, he is surrounded by incest, betrayal, murder, conspiracy, insanity, and just a hint of political intrigue. Very similar to Queen Elizabeth I's life, actually, but hey, Shakespeare isn't going to say that out loud. Anyway, Hamlet saw sleep as a double-edged sword. Sleep can be an escape from a terrible life OR it can be a reminder as long as dreams play a part.
So why do I wax poetic about Hamlet's little quote, despite the fact that I am an English major and we do these things? Well, put simply, I've been reflecting a lot about the dreams I've been having. Fortunately, my life is not as well … … exciting as Hamlet's (Thank God), but I do agree with his idea of sleep being a help and a hindrance. Sure, it's a great way to deal with boredom when you're unemployed like I am. It's also, um, necessary for life considering scientists have proven that sleep deprivation can kill you. But, those damn dreams are supposedly necessary for survival as well. I remember learning that in my high school psychology class. If you don't dream, you go a little crazy – which is part of the reason people are really not supposed to take sleeping pills because the pills somehow repress the REM process. That's simple neuroscience. However, since I am not a science person, obviously I don't worry too much about the fact that I have a very healthy REM process and I have no problem dreaming. I get more upset about the fact that my dreams are so lifelike.
OK, so I admit it … I'm actually a bit of a follower of Freud on this one. Now, before anyone gets worried, I don't believe Freud was right about everything. Not all female problems are caused by hysteria and his child development theory was way off base (An anal phase … are you kidding??). Don't even get me started on the Oedipal Complex. Yet, it is well known that Freud believed that “dreams are the royal road to the unconscious” and this is where I actually see some credibility. Why, you might ask? After all, a stupid English major like me should not really see evidence in theories such as this. Well, when you consider how much stinking symbolism I've been asked to find over the years, seeing symbols in my dreams is no great stretch. The worst part is, I've also been blessed with the ability to remember my dreams and to have both vivid and lucid dreams. So not only do I think I'm actually awake, I try to control what happens in the dream at the same time. Then, I can't forget the damn dream or the emotions it caused when I've finally woken up! I've read that the vivid dreams are a symptom of bipolar disorder – so I guess my psychologist wasn't far off when he diagnosed me as having tendencies. Plus, it also explains why my dreams get so f-ed up when I forget to take my antidepressant. You'd think that since I have lucid dreams, I could control enough of the vivid dreams to make them less disturbing, but I only have low lucidity – which means I don't have enough power to control the dream – just to recognize that it is a dream. Crap. Anyway, I digress …
Do you know the biggest reason I believe in this theory? It's simply because my damn subconscious will not let me forget things I want to forget and it makes me admit things that I don't want to deal with in my waking world. Now, again, before anyone worries, I'm not repressing memories of brutality or abuse. It's simply issues, people, or events that I did not or do not have the ability to deal with in the real world. I have recurring characters (not like people I see on a daily basis, but people I haven't seen in years and I have recurring themes. This is different from recurring dreams overall because I don't have the same dream over and over again . I simply have the same people dealing with the same crap in a different way. So, I can't deny that these people / themes have some significance to me, but damned if I can tell you what that significance is when I'm awake. Sure, I can explain who some of the people are (most are men … some I've dated, some I've been friends with … even some I've taught … which is scary enough as it is), but I can't tell you why my subconscious is making them the lead roles in my dreams. Checking dream dictionaries only help a little. Sure, they offer some real guidance as to what specific symbols / themes mean, but when it comes to specific people, they're a little vague. They're much better when it comes to themes / symbols.
All right, my point in all this is that I hate to dream. I don't necessarily have good or bad dreams. I just have weird dreams that really leave me asking, “WTF?” upon awakening. Those dreams get more confusing when I have things showing up that aren't necessarily symbols but can be described as such by a dream dictionary. For example, I have two black cats and I dream about them all the time. One dream dictionary says that a black cat in your dream signifies a “fear of using your psychic abilities and believing in your intuition.” Ooooook. Considering I don't have gut feelings that often, this may be true. Another example is that I often dream that I'm in one car, but I'm controlling another car from the one I am in (you know, kind of like Jamie and Adam do on occasion on “Mythbusters”?) The result is always the car I'm controlling crashing into something or someone while the one I am actually riding in is fine. Does the dream dictionary have anything for that little scenario? Nooooooooooooooo. So, like I said, WTF? I have some suspicions about what that might mean, but nothing conclusive.
So, for all those who believe sleep and dreams are a form of escapism, let me just tell you that idea is full of s *% #. If there are people who truly feel like that, then they must live blessed lives because I sure as hell never escape anything in my dreams. I'm forced to deal with things I don't want to deal with, and while many people would say this is good, I say it sucks because I can't do a damn thing about them in my waking life. Half the time, I can't even talk to the people who feature in the dreams because I lost touch with them years ago. So, this leaves me with frustration, anger, and some half-assed form of finding closure. That's bulls% # *. Just let me forget and all will be well.
Unless it's a really good sex dream – then I'll dream whenever you want. : D

So today was actually a really good day up until like, six. But let me explain. Chemistry I got a minus for not doing the homework, but I did one in class and got the problem perfect. Math I turned in a half ass assignment. Then I tuned out and wrote some of a story I might work on making more of. Latin was alright. Art I finished the small part of my drawing which I really like. That never happens with stuff I do. English we watched a movie on Mark Twain so we didn't do much of anything. History we had a test, which normally I would hate. But the teacher made a word bank type thing for all the answers, so I only missed like 8 and got a 91. Recycling was amazing. It was just me and two of my friends, instead of like seven. We filled our can, finding my new pet Chewie in the process [he's this brown fuzzy thing that had a jolly rancher stuck to him. (:] And had to steal a trash bag that we filled as full as we could. Then we had to carry it to the recycle bin and all three of us ran with the bag and called the guy who helps with the dumping over to help. He grabs the bag three of us couldn't carry and holds it over his head all down the road . I felt so weak. Then my best friend and I went to Barnes and Noble, then realised her gift card was to Borders. Went to Target, got nail polish finally. Went to Borders and found some books I really want. Went to eat [I'll explain down further]. Theeen went to the library, renewed my card and paid off my 25 cent fine. Rented some Hemingway. Went to her house and just shitted around.
So while all of this was amazing, and one of the best days I've had in awhile, I had to eat. I planned on a fast today but since I was with my best friend, who calls me anorexic if I don't eat, I had to. I got a salad, 330 cals. No problem right? Wrong. We went to another place for her to get something, and I ordered this peanut butter thing, 620 fucking cals. If that wasn't awful enough, I binged even more on pasta at home. Just terrible, I feel like a cow. But I purged my home binge since I couldn't my peanut butter one. Fast tomorrow, school, library. I really can't wait. I should sleep, then tomorrow will come faster. Peace. Xoxo.

One thought that occurs to me is that men will continue to withdraw from nature in order to create an environment that will suit them better. By 2014, electroluminescent panels will be in common use. Ceilings and walls will glow softly, and in a variety of colors that will change at the touch of a push button.
Windows need be no more than an archaic touch, and even when present will be polarized to block out the harsh sunlight. The degree of opacity of the glass may even be made to alter automatically in accordance with the intensity of the light falling upon it.
There is an underground house at the fair which is a sign of the future. if its windows are not polarized, they can nevertheless alter the “scenery” by changes in lighting. Suburban houses underground, with easily controlled temperature, free from the vicissitudes of weather, with air cleaned and light controlled, should be fairly common. At the New York World's Fair of 2014, General Motors ' “Futurama” may well display vistas of underground cities complete with light-forced vegetable gardens. The surface, G.M. will argue, will be given over to large-scale agriculture, grazing and parklands, with less space wasted on actual human occupancy.
Gadgetry will continue to relieve mankind of tedious jobs. Kitchen units will be devised that will prepare “automeals,” heating water and converting it to coffee; toasting bread; frying, poaching or scrambling eggs, grilling bacon, and so on. Breakfasts will be “ordered” the night before to be ready by a specified hour the next morning. Complete lunches and dinners, with the food semiprepared, will be stored in the freezer until ready for processing. I suspect, though, that even in 2014 it will still be advisable to have a small corner in the kitchen unit where the more individual meals can be prepared by hand, especially when company is coming.
Robots will neither be common nor very good in 2014, but they will be in existence. The I.B.M. exhibit at the present fair has no robots but it is dedicated to computers, which are shown in all their amazing complexity, notably in the task of translating Russian into English. If machines are that smart today, what may not be in the works 50 years hence? It will be such computers, much miniaturized, that will serve as the “brains” of robots. In fact, the I.B.M. building at the 2014 World's Fair may have, as one of its prime exhibits, a robot housemaid * large, clumsy, slow-moving but capable of general picking-up, arranging, cleaning and manipulation of various appliances. It will undoubtedly amuse the fairgoers to scatter debris over the floor in order to see the robot lumberingly remove it and classify it into “throw away” and “set aside.” (Robots for gardening work will also have made their appearance.)
General Electric at the 2014 World's Fair will be showing 3-D movies of its “Robot of the Future,” neat and streamlined, its cleaning appliances built in and performing all tasks briskly. (There will be a three-hour wait in line to see the film, for some things never change.)
The appliances of 2014 will have no electric cords, of course, for they will be powered by long-lived batteries running on radioisotopes. The isotopes will not be expensive for they will be by-products of the fission-power plants which, by 2014, will be supplying well over half the power needs of humanity. But once the isotype batteries are used up they will be disposed of only through authorized agents of the manufacturer.
And experimental fusion-power plant or two will already exist in 2014. (Even today, a small but genuine fusion explosion is demonstrated at frequent intervals in the GE exhibit at the 1964 fair.) Large solar-power stations will also be in operation in a number of desert and semi-desert areas – Arizona, the Negev, Kazakhstan. In the more crowded, but cloudy and smoggy areas, solar power will be less practical. An exhibit at the 2014 fair will show models of power stations in space, collecting sunlight by means of huge parabolic focusing devices and radiating the energy thus collected down to earth.
The world of 50 years hence will have shrunk further. At the 1964 fair, the G.M. exhibit depicts, among other things, “road-building factories” in the tropics and, closer to home, crowded highways along which long buses move on special central lanes. There is every likelihood that highways at least in the more advanced sections of the world * will have passed their peak in 2014; there will be increasing emphasis on transportation that makes the least possible contact with the surface. There will be aircraft, of course, but even ground travel will increasingly take to the air * a foot or two off the ground. Visitors to the 1964 fair can travel there in an “aquafoil,” which lifts itself on four stilts and skims over the water with a minimum of friction. This is surely a stop-gap. By 2014 the four stilts will have been replaced by four jets of compressed air so that the vehicle will make no contact with either liquid or solid surfaces.
Jets of compressed air will also lift land vehicles off the highways, which, among other things, will minimize paving problems. Smooth earth or level lawns will do as well as pavements. Bridges will also be of less importance, since cars will be capable of crossing water on their jets, though local ordinances will discourage the practice.
Much effort will be put into the designing of vehicles with “Robot-brains” * vehicles that can be set for particular destinations and that will then proceed there without interference by the slow reflexes of a human driver. I suspect one of the major attractions of the 2014 fair will be rides on small roboticized cars which will maneuver in crowds at the two-foot level, neatly and automatically avoiding each other.
For short-range travel, moving sidewalks (with benches on either side, standing room in the center) will be making their appearance in downtown sections. They will be raised above the traffic. Traffic will continue (on several levels in some places) only because all parking will be off-street and because at least 80 per cent of truck deliveries will be to certain fixed centers at the city's rim. Compressed air tubes will carry goods and materials over local stretches, and the switching devices that will place specific shipments in specific destinations will be one of the city's marvels.
Communications will become sight-sound and you will see as well as hear the person you telephone. The screen can be used not only to see the people you call but also for studying documents and photographs and reading passages from books. Synchronous satellites, hovering in space will make it possible for you to direct-dial any spot on earth, including the weather stations in Antarctica (shown in chill splendor as part of the '64 General Motors exhibit).
For that matter, you will be able to reach someone at the moon colonies, concerning which General Motors puts on a display of impressive vehicles (in model form) with large soft tires * intended to negotiate the uneven terrain that may exist on our natural satellite .
Any number of simultaneous conversations between earth and moon can be handled by modulated laser beams, which are easy to manipulate in space. On earth, however, laser beams will have to be led through plastic pipes, to avoid material and atmospheric interference. Engineers will still be playing with that problem in 2014.
Conversations with the moon will be a trifle uncomfortable, but the way, in that 2.5 seconds must elapse between statement and answer (it takes light that long to make the round trip). Similar conversations with Mars will experience a 3.5-minute delay even when Mars is at its closest. However, by 2014, only unmanned ships will have landed on Mars, though a manned expedition will be in the works and in the 2014 Futurama will show a model of an elaborate Martian colony.
As for television, wall screens will have replaced the ordinary set; but transparent cubes will be making their appearance in which three-dimensional viewing will be possible. In fact, one popular exhibit at the 2014 World's Fair will be such a 3-D TV, built life-size, in which ballet performances will be seen. The cube will slowly revolve for viewing from all angles.
One can go on indefinitely in this happy extrapolation, but all is not rosy.

Writer’s Block: Reminiscing about the Internet

Oh the 90's … I used to chat on AIM and look up Backstreet Boy's .. anything! I taught myself some HTML and ran a “BSB humor” site with a girl I would never end up meeting. I knew every fact and knew about every photo that would come out. Now there is so much info! celeb PR really has changed the game .. your average miley cyrus fan has hours and hours of stuff to look at and probably haven't seen it all. Plus artists back then used to put albums out regularly (every 2 years or so) now there are 5,000 cds, dvds, blu-rays to acquire. Wow this has gone pretty off topic. Anyways, I started actually using the internet in like 93/94. My dad was a computer guy so we were always “cutting edge” (i typed before i could speak english). Basically I can't imagine a life without it!

Are there Internet technologies in the school of a small town?

Computers and using the Internet has changed the way I teach – but is this really an improvement?
One positive aspect for me as a teacher is that I can find everything I need staying at home: information, online lessons, other teachers 'experiences, tests etc.
Furthermore, today's students feel comfortable and happy with computers and they feel happier when their teacher knows a little about technology. Actually, they sometimes speak the same language with a teacher when a teacher is “a bit advanced”. In addition to this, students get to know that there is an enormous range of things in the Internet for studying and useful communication and that they can study not only reading textbooks.
However, not all students of an ordinary secondary school in a small town have a computer at home, less of them have the Internet. There is a computer almost in each classroom today but usually it is not a new one, so it cannot do much. One more negative aspect in an ordinary school is that the only classroom where the Internet can be used is the ICT classroom. In fact at the lesson the teacher can work with what he / she prepared at home.
On the one hand, using Internet technologies is the future of our schools. I hope my dream to have a computer lab in the English classroom will come true soon. On the other hand, nobody can teach better than an instructor. Computers and Internet can help both: a teacher and a student.
In my view, computer technologies are useful, but they cannot replace a teacher.

Продаю підручник з бізнес Інглішу Market Leader Intermediate Business English Course Book (New Edition), з аудіопріложеніем.
