Note to self: Make this post prettier like whoa.
This Post Is About Me
Hey, there. My name is Fred, and I am a college freshman who likes to dress nicely and take pictures of herself dressed nicely. I have awesome boots.
I am a terribly unqualified person to be posting a fashion blog. But that's all right with me because this is a personal fashion blog about what I wear and what I like and certainly not about what other people wear; that's the kind of blog I usually don't like: the ones that criticize what people wear. When it's done constructively, I have no problem with it, but a lot of people just think way too highly of their own fashion preferences. Or maybe I'm too lenient and like everything. I don't know. I do dress kind of oddly. / rant
Things I Like
I like a whole lot of things, most of which aren't relevant to this journal. Like rocks. My main journal is. I post about video games, television, books, web design, school, and other nerdy topics over there. These are slightly more relevant:
BRANDS: Forever21, h.ANARCHY, Sephora
DESIGNERS: Hussein Chalayan, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood
MUSIC: deadman, Dir en grey, girug% 26 # 252; amesh, Ludo, Merry, Mucc, Regina Spektor, Pierrot, the studs
Things I Can Do
Put on clothes. Use Photoshop. See in color. Read and speak basic Japanese. Read, write, and speak advanced English. (Woohoo!) Identify certain types of sedimentary or igneous rocks. Employ parallel verb tense.
Things I Can't Do
Hair. Make up. Photography. Read and speak intermediate Japanese. Write kanji. Identify most types of rocks. Employ parallel verb tense. Hair.

Below is copied the first draft of my SoP for various top-tier International Relations masters programs. As you can tell it's well over the length recommendations of 500-700 words, so among everything else, I need your help cutting this thing down to size.
Please don't hold back. I'm not sensitive and recognize the value of candid criticism. I'm most concerned with the essay's focus, whether it is specific enough, and whether I'm being too autobiographical (or just regurgitating my resume).
Thanks in advance!
_
I wish I could say that applying to the [X masters] program is something I've always dreamed of. It is not. Rather, my interest in international relations graduate programs and pursuing a career in international trade and commerce policy has grown and evolved substantially over time. Three experiences in particular have shaped my immediate and long term aspirations. While each is listed on my resum% 26 # 233;, to truly understand their influence it is imperative to understand how each has complemented the others, offering me varied perspectives and unique insights, all of which, in aggregate, will allow me to contribute to and benefit from the [The Program's] [Y] concentration.
The three experiences to which I refer are: conducting my honors-thesis research on the impact of government incentives for Foreign Direct Investment; working in Costa Rica for a year following graduation; and working in my current role as manager of international government relations at a global corporation. Researching and writing my undergraduate honors thesis provided an introduction to the concepts and issues at play for a developing country looking to attract investment from multi-national corporations. I analyzed the determining factors in a company's decision to invest in foreign marketa, and most importantly, I examined the developmental implications of various incentives employed by governments to attract the investment. My research left me with a desire to explore these issues further via first-hand experience working in a Latin American country benefiting directly from high-impact investment.
Working in Costa Rica served a dual purpose. On the one hand, I gained direct, practical experience living in a developing nation and using my Spanish language abilities in a professional setting. More importantly, however, my time in Costa Rica provided real life verification of the issues I explored in my thesis. I had written in largely conceptual terms of the benefits of high-impact investment. Now I was witnessing for myself the real positive consequences investment can have on economic development. I was personally instructing students in advanced English communication skills and placing them in well paying high-tech jobs at major multi-national corporations. I heard directly from these students, who were pursuing extra-curricular education at their own cost, of how they hoped to build their communicative and technical skill-sets, work for companies such as Motorola and HP, and use the training, experience, and credibility garnered from working at these companies to branch out on their own and start their own companies. It was this experience, seeing first-hand the impact of the private and public sector working together toward mutually beneficial goals, that invigorated my interest in the topics I addressed in my research and convinced me to pursue a job working at the intersection of industry and government for a corporation that itself invests directly in emerging markets.
Over the past two years as manager of international government relations at [my company] I have gained exposure to the variety of issues facing a global corporation; I have confronted the endemic complications of conducting international business and engaged important actors throughout the private and public sectors to build opportunities and resolve disputes. I worked with the Argentinean Ambassador to the US and other diplomatic officials to bring attention to a long-standing contract dispute between [my company] and the Government of Argentina. I conducted outreach to the IDB, World Bank-IFC, and Ex-Im Bank to help secure project finance for an opportunity to modernize customs systems and build trade capacity in Jamaica. And for the past several months I have directed [my company] 's participation in the World Bank “Aid for Trade” initiative – a public / private collaboration to improve trade facilitation and build capacity in emerging markets. But for all the excellent opportunities this job has given me, it has also introduced me to the frustrations and limitations of supporting a single corporation. The reality is that I represent a narrow set of interests in a specific industry. I have realized over the last two years that my true interests lie in shaping the policies that impact and regulate international commerce and investment.
The global economic system is dynamic and complex, and the roles of public and private stakeholders in this system are becoming increasingly more interrelated. It is precisely at this nexus of government and industry that I intend to build my career. I have benefited from a diverse set of experiences that have introduced me to the concepts, complexities, and major stakeholders in this system. I realize, however, that to play a key role crafting efficacious policy will require both a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the forces impacting this system.
With courses that address both traditional government / policy topics such as trade, international economics, and transnational regulation as well as private business / management topics such as investment strategy and corporate governance, the [Masters Program] concentration in [Y] represents a recognition that a successful practitioner in the international economic system requires a breadth of understanding that spans the public and private sectors. It is evident that [Y] concentration appeals to my career goals, and I am confident that the program is an exacting complement to my professional and academic experiences. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute to the program's dialogue and discourse.
