Our brain forms a separate Languge Center for each language that the child is learning. You think that the brain has no capacity to fit in too many languages? Ha! I bet you don't know yet that human brain is used for 5% only from it's natural – not overloaded at all – ability! But! If you don't train your brain in early ages to keep neuron connections organized, the other very natural process “loss brain cells” will progress and as the child grows and become an adult he / she looses this amazing ability. That is sad, but is not the end! Even at the old ages as 70-80 you can improve your brain ability by starting learning! Sounds weard? There are researches that prove that by going to colledge in their 70s old people improve their overall health condition and brain abilities (in general, again!). I think these benefits are too nice to be neglected. So, don't waste your time and let's start working. Parents, you will become smarter too – I promise.
Before I start, I want to acknowledge two good books and methodics. The first book is one of the best I've ever read. This is “How to have a smarter baby. The Infant Stimulation Program For Enhancing Your 'Baby Natural Development” by Dr Susan Ludington-Hoe with Susan K. Golant. I highly recommend you to read the introduction part “The infant stimulation Revolution: what we didn't know until now”. I was trully impressed with the story how a mother resqued her baby born premature from death by just talking and singing songs to the baby. The baby didn't respond, didn't even open eyes – but mother didn't give up. And she WON! She won her baby life over!
Another method is “The Language Bridge: acquiring Language the Natural Way” by Arkady Zilberman – the method I initially used to learn English. I highly recommend this method to others since it's a simple way that 100% effective. This method has no chance to fail on any person with any ability to learn and any start level.
So, I apply these two methods mixed together to teach little kids different languages. I teach them: English (primary), Russian, Classic Music (I consider it a language), Spanish, Feelings (this is a whole revolutional language). You can go even further – the method works for any language and for as many as you are able manage to introduce to the child.
Progress stages
Stage 1. Passive vocabulary. Talk, talk, talk – about everything, everywhere. Use all words you know. Two years old is not able to understand the meaning of the word “professional”, but (!!!) she is absolutely able to learn how to use that word properly! So, don't afraid to use words “integral”, “summarize”, “gravitation”, “financial crisis” … Extremely important: to work intensively on everyday vocabulary, so say and give “names” to EVERYTHING you are doing in front of the child. Nothing is too stupid to say. Let's say you cooking food, say, “Well, I am going to cook mushed potato for dinner. What do I need? Potato, of course! Let's take potato and … Can we eat it like that? No, silly you! We have to peel the skin off. So, let's do it! ” – And so on. During this stage that usually takes about 1-2 months I drink the huge amount of water – my mouth doesn't close, seriously.
Stage 2. Trying on. The toddler starts to use words. So, praise, praise, praise! Good job reminding me! Good job telling me what you want! Great sentence! Nice thoughts – we certainly should do that! This stage is very important for incouraging and raising: 1. interest to a particular language; 2. self-esteem.
Stage 3. Confident using. Keep this stage alive. Fit all the languages into your routine life style – be open to the new words that your child will be bringing. Books, movies and people who speak that language must be in your life on a regular basis – not less rare than every other week.
Examples of progressive learning programs for English, Russian, Feelings and Classic Music are coming soon.
