'Jab we met', the movie praised for its simplicity and realistic, is remade in Tamil version. Has it recreated the magic? The film starts with Sakthi (Bharath), son of a famous industrialist, who goes to his Ex-lover's marriage. The depressed Sakthi sees her for the final time. He gets into a train where he meets Anjali (Tamanna), who is a talkative and an incessant chatterbox.Sakthi finds Anjali irritating. She tells Sakthi about her love for Goutham. At a station Sakthi gets down from the train. When the train starts moving, Anjali tries to get him back on the train, she ends up missing it and the two find themselves stranded on a desolate station Virudhachalam with no luggage or money. The two stays on a Lodge for some time and they go to Theni, Anjali's hometown. Anjali's family members decide her to elope with Mokkai Raasu (Santhanam). Anjali decides to run away for Goutham, who lives in Ooty. Sakthi helps her to go to Ooty. After leaving Anjali in Ooty, Sakthi comes to chennai.
Sakthi apologizes for leaving the company and going somewhere else. With a positive outlook and new conviction on life because of Anjali, he guides the company to great success. After 9 months, seeing Sakthi on TV, Anjali's father runs to chennai to meet him.Sakthi is shocked to hear that Anjali has not returned home. He takes it upon himself to find her and return her to her family.
Sakthi returns to Ooty where he expects her to be with her new husband but finds that Goutham had turned her out to the streets and refused to marry her. After saying a few spiteful words to Goutham for what he did, Sakthi leaves to find Anjali. He finds Anjali and asks her to come with him. However, Goutham arrives and exclaims that he has realized he was a jerk and tries to patch up their relationship. Initially, Anjali does not think she will accept his apology but Sakthi pushes her to accept it and be with him even though he loves her too.
All three then travel back to Theni to bring Anjali back and to announce that Anjali and Goutham are involved. Back in Theni, the family again assumes that Anjali and Goutham are together and in all the confusion there is no chance to right the family's misconceptions. While trying to clear the misconception, situations make Anjali realize that she is in fact in love with Sakthi, not Goutham, and therefore, both of them get married.
Well, thats the story. The first half has been refreshing. With Santhanam in the peak of his comedy form, his dialogues gimmicks. The second half with 3 songs come within a span of 25 minutes sags the story. Kareena's acting cannot be compared to Tamanna. Kareena wins so is Shahid to Bharath. In the original movie, the way Kareena starts to love Shahid was shown with intense emotion. But here, R. Kannan, the director has completely neglected it. I dont know why. In stead where it should be serious love (at the end between Bharath and Tamanna), he had included Santhanam's comedy in which the logic sored. Though that climax, where Tamanna hugs Bharath, makes you forget it all.
Vidhyasagar's music is hugely disappointing. Dialogues by Pattukottai Prabhakar, in many areas seems he had translated from the original movie's english subtitles. The camera works are good. All in all it cannot match the original one, but still Santhanam's presence makes it a watchable one.
Verdict: Only for Santhanam otherwise, better watch “Jab we met”.
Ratings: 2 and half.
